The four common preliminaries and the five uncommon preliminaries are unique to the Tibetan tradition. However, the goals they are oriented towards are common to other Buddhist traditions, such as those found in China. The Chinese traditions also emphasise the cultivation of bodhicitta and renunciation. However, the Tibetan tradition has a great storehouse of practical techniques for such cultivation, including the preliminary practices.
